The first USGA Women's Amateur Championship was arranged on short
notice and played at the Meadow Brook Club, Hempstead, N.Y., on
November 9, 1985. Thirteen ladies participated at 18 holes, stroke
play, and the winner was Mrs. Charles S. Brown, of the Shinnecock
Hills Golf Club, Southampton, N.Y., with 69-63-132.
Miss N.C. Sargent, of the Essex County Club, Manchester, Mass.,
was runnerup at 134. Nine holes were played before and nine after
lunch. The silver pitcher donated by Messrs. R. D. Winthrop and
W.H. Sands was won outright by Mrs. Brown, and has been given to
the USGA Museum by her son, A.M. Brown.
