Semple Thompson Eliminated As Quarterfinal Matches Set

Scarborough, N.Y. – The round of 16 dwindled to eight after morning matches were completed at the 102nd U.S. Women’s Amateur at the 6,190-yard, par-71 Sleepy Hollow Country Club on Thursday.

Carol Semple Thompson, 53, of Sewickley, Pa., saw her run end as Duke’s Virada Nirapathpongpor, 20, of Durham, N.C., won 5 and 3. Two of the three remaining USA Curtis Cup team members also advanced.

In one of the more exciting matches, Walailak Satarak, 18, of Thailand fended off 16-year-old Aree Wongluekiet of Bradenton, Fla., in 19 holes.

Wongluekiet had evened the match on the 18th when she sent her approach within 5 feet of the hole and knocked in the birdie putt.

On the extra hole, both players got on the green in two. Satarak, looking over a 12-foot birdie putt, watched as the ball broke left before it disappeared into the hole. She raised her left arm in celebration. Wongluekiet had a chance to halve the hole, but she pushed her 8-footer right.

Satarak credited her caddie with lining up the putt.

“I didn’t want to walk up No. 2,” said Satarak, in reference to the steep uphill climb on the second hole. “I’m so happy. I’m going to call my mother.”

Said Wongluekiet: “She’s a really strong player – physically and mentally.”

Next up for Satarak is Lindsey Wright, 22, of Australia. Wright defeated Erica Blasberg of Corona, Calif., 5 and 3.

Twenty-one-year-old Emily Bastel of Upper Sandusky, Ohio, and Mollie Frankhauser, 21, of Columbus, Ohio – two players on the USA Curtis Cup squad – made it to the quarterfinal. A third member, Angela Jerman, 22, of Columbus, Ga., fell short when she lost to Maru Martinez, 18, of Venezuela, 1 up.

Bastel eliminated 19-year-old Christine Boucher of Canada, 5 and 3, setting up an afternoon meeting with Becky Lucidi, 21, of Poway, Calif. Nearly blowing a 4-up lead, Lucidi held off Elizabeth Janangelo, 18, of West Hartford, Conn., winning 2 up.

With 5 birdies on the first 10 holes, and a 31 on the front nine, Lucidi cruised to a 4-up advantage at the turn.

“When things are going your way, things are going your way,” said Lucidi.

However, the tide turned on Lucidi before she could weather the storm. A Janangelo birdie and par on holes 13 and 14, respectively, cut the deficit in half. Lucidi’s lead evaporated to only 1 up after three-putting the 17th hole, opening the door for Janangelo as they entered No. 18.

“I got a little jittery coming down 17,” said Lucidi.

On No. 18, Janagelo placed her approach left of the green and then couldn’t get up and down. Lucidi, a fifth year “super senior” at the University of Southern Cal and 2000 quarterfinalist at the Women’s Amateur Public Links, has never faced Michigan State graduate Bastel. “I just know she was on the Curtis Cup team,” she said.

In Bastel’s match, the key moment came when she got up and down from 75 yards away on No. 8, setting up a 12-foot birdie putt that she sank. That gave her a 2-up lead and confidence.

After making the semifinals last year, Bastel is taking nothing for granted.

“I had a lot of fun last year,” said Bastel. “I kind of proved to myself that I can play and do well in an event like this.”

The U.S. Women’s Amateur is one of 13 championships conducted by the United States Golf Association each year, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.

The U.S. Women’s Amateur is open to female amateur golfers who have USGA handicap indexes not exceeding 5.4. Entries closed June 19.

After two rounds (36 holes) of stroke play, the lowest 64 scorers advanced to match play. The first two rounds of match play, consisting of 18 holes each, was played Wednesday, with the third round and quarterfinals being contested Thursday. The semifinals are scheduled for Friday and the 36-hole final is set for Saturday.
