Threat Of Lightning Suspends Play
Scarborough, N.Y. – Play was officially suspended at 12:31 p.m. as lightning moved into the area. Strikes were recorded within 6 miles of the course, according to one official. Players were moved to nearby shelters.
Becky Lucidi, 21, of Poway, Calif., was leading 22-year-old Lindsay Wright of Australia 1 up through 12 holes when play was halted. In the second match to go off Friday morning, Maru Martinez, 18, of Venezuela was ahead of 21-one-year-old Brandi Jackson of Belton, S.C., 2 up after 11 holes.
Wright had just finished draining a 75-yard chip for birdie off the front of the 12th green to cut into Lucidi’s lead. Meanwhile, Martinez, who has led the entire match, went to 2 up with a 12-footer for par.
Officials had no estimate when play would resume.
