Aree Song is Medalist in 2003 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship

Gladwyne, Pa. – Aree Song, 17, captured medalist honors at four-under-par 71-67—138 in stroke-play qualifying in the 2003 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship at the 6,368-yard, par-71 course at Philadelphia Country Club.

Song led a trio of junior players who captured three of the top four qualifying spots. Michelle Wie, 13, of Honolulu, Hawaii, was second with 73-67—140. In-Bee Park, 15, of Eustis, Fla., tied for third at 70-72—142. Erica Blasberg, of Corona, Calif., tied Park with identical scores and is 19.

"I’m playing well, and not only that, I’m scoring well,” said Song. “I really have no weaknesses right now, and hopefully that will put some pressure on my opponents.”

Song was low amateur in this year’s U.S. Women’s Open, finishing fifth overall. “It’s a great confidence builder,” said Song of her finish in that championship. In today’s second round she recorded four birdies and eagled the 508-yard, par-5 12th when she holed a sand wedge shot from 30 yards.

Michelle Wie shows off her raw power during her second round of stroke-play qualifying on Wednesday. She finished with a 4-under 67 and wound up as the No. 2 seed for match play. (John Mummert/USGA)

Wie had two bogeys but recorded six birdies on putts ranging from three to 24 feet.

"I wasn’t putting so well (Monday) so I just trusted myself and I’m very happy with the way I putted today,” said Wie. “I think I could have shot even better because I made two stupid bogeys, but golf can’t be perfect.”

The 67s shot by Song and Wie were the low rounds of the championship by two strokes.

Four players were at one-over-par 143. They are Paula Creamer, 16, of Pleasanton, Calif., Lisa Meldrum, 21, of Canada, Virada Nirapathpongporn, 21, of Thailand, and Jane Park, 16, of Oak Valley, Calif.

Defending champion Becky Lucidi, 22, of Poway, Calif., easily qualified at 74-73—147. But Carol Semple Thompson, 54, of Sewickley, Pa., who owns seven United States Golf Association titles, missed the cut for the first time since 1969. Her 36-hole total of 159 was six strokes too many.

The cut came at 153, 11 over par, with 10players playing off for fiv match-play slots. Emily Bastel, of Upper Sandusky, Ohio, who won the 64 th spot on the 8 th playoff hole, gave herself a great 23 rd birthday present.

In the first of two match play rounds Thursday, Song plays Bastel at 7:30 a.m. Wie heads the lower bracket with her 9:38 a.m. match against Maru Martinez, of Venezuela. Park faces Katie Connelly, of Madison, Wisc., at 8:34 a.m. and Blasberg goes against Allison Fouch, of Grand Rapids, Mich., at 10:34 a.m.

Match play continues with two matches on Friday, the semifinals on Saturday and a 36-hole final on Sunday. The Women’s Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted by the USGA, of which ten are strictly for amateurs.

Nine present or former USGA champions remain in the field. Song won the 1999 U.S. Girls’ Junior. Wie is the 2003 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links champion. Park was the 2002 U.S. Girls’ Junior winner. Annie Thurman, of Highland, Utah, won the 2002 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links. Lucidi won this championship last year. Ellen Port, of St. Louis, Mo., is a three-time U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Champion. Lisa Ferrero won the 2000 U.S. Girls’ Junior. Kathy Hartwiger won the 2002 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur and Laura Shanahan-Rowe won the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur in 2001.

Nine countries are represented by the players who qualified for match play: Australia, Canada, Chinese Taipei, Mexico, Republic of Korea, Spain, Thailand, the United States of America and Venezuela.
