Kim is Medalist in 2005 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship

Roswell, Ga. – In-Kyung Kim, 17, of Korea, was medalist in the 36-hole stroke-play qualifying for the 2005 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship being held at the 6,341-yard, par-72 Settindown Creek Course of Ansley Golf Club.

Kim had four birdies against three bogeys for a second-round 71 on Tuesday and a 36-hole total of 5-under-par 139.  Annie Thurman-Young, 22, of Highland, Utah, Jennie Lee, 18, of Huntingon Beach, Calif., and Ashley Knoll, 20, of The Woodlands, Texas, tied for second with 36-hole scores of 3-under 141.

Morgan Pressel, 17, of Boca Raton, Fla., finished in the fifth spot at 142, two under par.

Kim, the reigning U.S. Girls’ Junior Champion, is playing in only her fifth women’s competition.  She leads the field into the match-play portion of the championship which begins Wednesday.

“I’ll play no differently than I did in stroke play,” said Kim after her round.  “I like match play.”  She swept through six matches last month in capturing the Girls’ Junior Championship at BanBury Golf Club in Eagle, Idaho.

Defending champion Jane Park, 18, of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., easily qualified for match play with a score of 71-75—146, two over par.

“I feel good but my putting was very defensive today and I’ve got to putt a lot more aggressively tomorrow because that’s what match play is all about,” said Park.

Pressel was optimistic in heading into match play.  “Obviously, anything can happen so I’ve got to be ready to get through those six matches,” she said.  “It’s a long week.  Well, hopefully it’s a long week.”

Although relatively young, Thurman-Young, Lee and Knoll are veteran competitors.  Thurman-Young won the 2002 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship and captured three matches for the victorious USA team in the 2004 Curtis Cup Match. Lee, headed to Duke University in the fall, is a consistent winner in junior tournaments and was a quarterfinalist in last month’s Women’s Trans-National.  Knoll has captured several junior titles and is the current Women’s Texas Amateur Champion.

The cut came at 154, with eight contestants playing off for five spots. Two players were eliminated on Tuesday, Taylor Leon and Mallorie Underwood, leaving six players to return Wednesday morning at 7:15 to play for the spots.

Carol Semple Thompson, 56, of Sewickley, Pa., failed to advance in her record 100th appearance in a United States Golf Association championship.  Thompson finished at 162, eight strokes from the cut line.

Match play continues throughout the week with the 36-hole final scheduled for Sunday.

The U.S. Women’s Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted by the USGA.  Ten are strictly for amateurs.
