Mackenzie Medalist At Women's Amateur

North Plains, Ore. – Paige Mackenzie, 23, of Yakima, Wash., shot 69-70—139, three under par, to earn medalist honors Tuesday in the United States Women’s Amateur Championship at the 6,380-yard, par-71 Witch Hollow Course of Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club.

Mackenzie edged 2006 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links winner Tiffany Joh, 19, of San Diego, Calif., and 2005 U.S. Girls’ Junior champion In Kyung Kim, 18, of Korea, by two strokes. Joh fired a 68, the low round of the championship, to join Kim at one under par.

“I played really well,” said Mackenzie, a member of the victorious 2006 USA Curtis Cup team. “I hit a ton of fairways and a ton of greens.”

Mackenzie made just two bogeys against three birdies on this course that has twice hosted the U.S. Women’s Open. Showing respect for the tight fairways, she left her driver in the bag three times in favor of her 3-wood.

“I just tried to put the ball in play,” she said.

She captured the No. 1 spot for match play and on Wednesday will play Leah Wigger of Louisville, Ky., the 64th qualifier.

“I don’t feel as if there’s anything really different about match play,” Mackenzie said. “I’ll just go out there and try to feel solid.”

Mackenzie captured medalist honors almost by default. At least three players had a chance to tie her but slipped back, either by choice or by chance. Kim was four under par until a double-bogey 6 on the 17th and a bogey at the par-5 18th put her at one under.

Kim said she mistakenly believed that the medalist had never won the Women’s Amateur and that she didn’t try to win the qualifying medal for a second consecutive year, although the medalist has won 18 times, the last being Meredith Duncan in 2001 when she shared medalist honors with Celeste Troche.

The 2004 Women’s Amateur Champion, Jane Park, a member of the 2004 and 2006 Curtis Cup teams, said her father, Frank, told her there was a lot of pressure in being medalist heading into match play. “He gave me a number and I shot it,” said Park. “When I finished he said, ‘Okay, good job.’”

Park fired a round of 1-under-par 70 to qualify at even-par 142 and tied for fourth place with Ayaka Kaneko of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Mi Jung Hur of Korea. Kaneko advanced to the round of 16 at last year's Women's Amateur.

Katharina Schallenberg, 26, the German Women’s Amateur champion, made six birdies in the first 11 holes and was at four under par before stumbling to double bogeys on the 16th and 17th holes. Schallenberg rallied with a birdie on the 18th to finish with a 71 and was in at one over par. She tied Texas A&M All-American Ashley Knoll of The Woodlands, Texas, in seventh place.

The cut came at 9-over-par 151, tying the record scores of 1998 and 2002 for the lowest cut for match play. Seven contestants played off for five spots.

The Women’s Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted by the United States Golf Association. Ten are strictly for amateurs.
