Schepperle First-Round Clubhouse Leader In Weather-Delayed Women's Amateur

Carmel, Ind. – On a great scoring day, 26 players were under par when play was suspended, but Candace Schepperle, 19, of Birmingham, Ala., led them all, finishing at 5-under-par 67 in the first stroke-play round of the 2007 U.S. Women’s Amateur at the 6,497-yard, par-72 Crooked Stick Golf Club.

When play was suspended by weather, 13 players still on the course were at one under par or better.

On a day when the heat index reached 96, play began late and was suspended twice because of lightning in the area before it finally was called for the day at 7:15 p.m.

“I really didn’t have expectations,” said Schepperle, who finished among the early wave prior to the delays. “I went out there to have fun. I didn’t have a goal score or expectations for (Monday). It came out as it did.”

Schepperle had one bogey and six birdies, five of which came on her last nine holes, Crooked Stick’s front nine.

She credited solid putting, with only one three-putt green on the par-5 11th. Schepperle followed that bogey with a finishing stretch of seven straight pars and then turned to shoot 31 on the front nine.

Jennifer Song and Mi Jung Hur, both of Korea, were at five under par with three holes remaining in their rounds.  Along with the other 76 players who failed to finish, they will resume play Tuesday morning at 7:30 a.m. EDT. The second round of stroke play is scheduled to begin at approximately 8:45 a.m.

At a length of slightly less than 6,500 yards, Crooked Stick is one of the longest courses in the 112-year history of this championship, but firm course conditions enabled players to hit longer tee shots.  Schepperle said she drove the ball so well that she frequently hit 8-iron approach shots on holes where she would normally use a 5-iron.

Five players, including Tiffany Joh, 20, of San Diego, Calif., the 2006 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links champion, and newly crowned U.S. Girls’ Junior winner Kristen Park, 14, of Buena Park, Calif., trailed by two strokes at 3-under-par 69.

Joh, a junior-to-be at UCLA and a second-team All-America this past season, played a flawless round with no bogeys and three birdies.

“I felt pretty good, especially about my ball striking,” Joh said. “My putting could have been a little better. My ball striking was as good as I’ve seen it in recent memory. With the putting, I didn’t miss anything that I should have made. I’m not going to kill myself over it and go hit 900 3-footers.”

Those at 69 included a trio playing together for the first time.

The grouping of Jennifer Ackerson, 23, of Allen, Texas, Shanshan Feng, 17, of the Peoples Republic of China and Catherine O’Donnell, 17, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., combined for 12 birdies and two eagles.

“It’s a lot easier to visualize your shot going into the hole when you have two other people hitting it close,” Ackerson said. “We kind of banked off each other.”

Ackerson holed a 7-iron on the par-4 seventh hole for an eagle and O’Donnell eagled the 15th after reaching the par-5 in two shots and sinking a 25-foot putt.

After 36 holes of stroke-play qualifying, the field will be cut to the low 64 scorers for match play.  The championship will conclude with a 36-hole final on Sunday.

The USGA is the national governing body of golf in this country and Mexico, a combined territory that includes more than half of the game's golfers and golf courses.

The Association's most visible role is played out each season in conducting 13 national championships, including the U.S. Open, U.S. Women's Open and U.S. Senior Open. Ten additional USGA national championships are exclusively for amateurs, and include the U.S. Women's Amateur and the U.S. Amateur.
