Lewis, Wong Share Medalist Honors At 2007 U.S. Women's Amateur

Carmel, Ind. – Stacy Lewis, 22, of The Woodlands, Texas, and Kristina Wong, 16, of Vestal, N.Y., shot 70-69—139, five under par for 36 holes, to share medalist honors in the 2007 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship at the 6,497-yard, par-72 Crooked Stick Golf Club.

Lewis and Wong finished one stroke ahead of three 17-year-olds from Korea: Jennifer Song, So Yeon Ryu and Mi Jung Hur.  Song tied for low amateur at the 2007 Women’s Open.

Lewis, had five birdies and two bogeys. Her focus, however, was on moving into match play, not winning the qualifying medal.

“The medalist hasn’t had that much success,” said Lewis. “I was just playing for par and I got the putter rolling.”

Lewis has the strongest competitive record of the two medalists.  She is the 2007 individual NCAA Division I champion, a member of the winning USA team at the 2007 Copa de las Americas and was a semifinalist last year.  Wong, however, a high school junior in the fall, is playing in her fourth U.S. Women’s Amateur.

“It was good to have that experience because I knew the field was tough and the courses are always difficult,” Wong said, “so patience is the main thing.”

Like Lewis, Wong downplayed medalist honors.  “Being medalist would be cool but I couldn’t get too hung up on it,” she said.

The cut came at 7-over-par 151, tying the lowest cut in the 112-year history of this national championship.  There was no playoff.

Two 12-year-olds qualified: Pearl Jin of San Gabriel, Calif., and Alexis Thompson of Coral Springs, Fla.  Kimberly Kim, 15, of Hilo, Hawaii, who became the youngest champion in 2006, flirted with missing the cut.  Kim was five over par after 27 holes but rebounded with a 3-under-par 33 on her back nine to secure a match-play berth.

Amanda Blumenhurst, 20, a USA Curtis Cup player from Scottsdale, Ariz., also struggled to survive.  After skying to 4-over-par 40 on the front nine Monday, she played the last 27 holes in 2 under par to advance into match play.

All four of last year’s semifinalists qualified; Lewis, Kim, Katharina Schallenberg of Germany (76-71—147) and Lindy Duncan of Daytona Beach, Fla. (72-76—148).  Mina Harigae, 17, of Monterey, Calif., the 2007 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links champion (72-72—144), also advanced to match play.

Notables failing to qualify included 2007 U.S. Girls' Junior champion Kristen Park, 2006 U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur champion Meghan Bolger, three-time USA Curtis Cupper and 1998 U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur champion Virginia Grimes, two-time USGA Senior Women's Amateur champion Diane Lang, 2004 USGA Senior Women's Amateur champion Carolyn Creekmore and 2005 U.S. Women's Amateur semifinalist Alison Whitaker of Australia.

The Women's Amateur concludes with a 36-hole final on Sunday.
