Miss Mary Lena Faulk, of the Glen Arven Country Club, Thomasville, Ga., succeeded
Mrs. Pung, who had turned professional. In sultry August heat at the Rhode Island
Country Club, Miss Faulk played one of the fine rounds of the Championship,
a 73, to take a six-hole lead over Miss Polly Riley in the first half of the
final, and she held on to win, 3 and 2.
There was no qualifying round; 149 entrants who registered were drawn for
match play by a blind draw, except, that 13 players of known quality were distributed
among the quarters by a further draw. Miss Marlene Stewart, a Canadian who had
won the British Championship earlier in the year, participated but lost her
Miss Wiffi Smith, a 16-year-old who represented Mexico, went to the semi-finals.
Mrs. Vare was in match play for the 23d time; she had won 59 matches, six Championships,
two runnerup medals, four semi-finalist medals and six qualifying medals.
