Grace Lenczyk
Miss Grace Lenczyk, of the Indian Hill Country Club, Newington, Conn., defeated
Miss Helen Sigel in the final, 4 and 3, as the Championship returned to Pebble
Beach, Calif.
The only former Champions in the field were Mrs. Julius A. Page, Jr., and
Mrs. Glenna Collett Vare. Miss Suggs, Mrs. Zaharis, Mrs. Newell, Miss Jameson
and Miss Berg had all turned professional.
Mrs. Bettye Mims White, with a 77, led the qualifying, which again was set
at 18 holes. Miss Marlene Bauer reached the round of 16 at the age of 14. Miss
Sigel played the first nine in 34 strokes in winning her third-round match.
Miss Dorothy Kielty called a disqualification penalty on herself after inadvertently
allowing an 82, instead of an 83, to be posted as her score in the qualifying
round.
