1952
Jacqueline Pung
Mrs. Jacqueline Pung, of the Moanalua Golf Club, Honolulu, the first Hawaiian
to win a USGA Championship, defeated Miss Shirley McFedters, a student at the
University of California at Los Angeles, 2 and 1, in the final at the Waverley
Country Club, Portland, Ore.
Mrs. Pung was playing for only the third time and Miss McFedters for the first
time. Miss McFedters qualified for one of the 64 places in match play only on
the second hole of a playoff at the record low score of 88 (for 64 qualifiers).
Miss Kirby won the medal with a 76, but she and the other better-known players
lost in early rounds. Miss Pat Lesser, a 19 year old, went to the turn in 33
in the third round; she lost to Mrs. Pung in the semi-finals.
