1964
Barbara McIntire
Miss Barbara McIntire, of Colorado Springs, Colo., won for the second time
by defeating Miss JoAnne Gunderson, by 3 and 2 in the final at the Prairie Dunes
Country Club, Hutchinson, Kans. Miss McIntire first won in 1959.
At links-like Prairie Dunes, Miss McIntire staged a strong rally in the afternoon
round of the final. She was three down after 21 holes. It marked the third major
Championship victory for Miss McIntire, who also won the British Women's Amateur
in 1960.
Mrs. Welts, the defending Champion, entered although she was expecting the
birth of a child in November. Her 36-hole qualifying score of 162 failed to
qualify her for match play. Qualifying at the site was resumed after a 13-year
interruption.
Miss McIntire, Miss Gunderson and Miss Polly Riley, shared the medal with
totals of 151. The losing semi-finalists were Mrs Paul Dye, Jr., Indianapolis,
Ind., who lost to Miss Gunderson by 5 and 4, and Miss Robbye King Norfolk, Va.,
who was defeated, 3 and 1, by Miss McIntire.
