1965
Jean Ashley
Miss Jean Ashley, of Chanute, Kansas, three down after 19 holes in the final,
rallied to defeat Mrs. Welts, by 5 and 4, at the Lakewood Country Club, Denver,
Colo.
Miss Ashley, 26, a third-grade teacher, was the runnerup in 1960. Her victory
thwarted Mrs. Welts' bid to win the Championship for a fourth time.
From 1957 through 1964 the Championship had been won only by Mrs. Welts, Miss
Barbara McIntire, and Miss JoAnne Gunderson. Miss McIntire, the defending Champion,
lost to Miss Ashley in the quarter-final round. Miss Gunderson did not enter.
The defeated semi-finalists were Miss Connie June Day, of Chattanooga, Tenn.,
who lost to Miss Ashley by 2 and 1, and Miss Polly Riley, who lost to Mrs. Welts
on the 19th hole.
Miss Riley, who had been an entrant 20 times, advanced to the quarter-final
round or better on nine occasions. The medalist was Miss Lida Fee Matthews,
of Portsmouth Ohio, with 74-74-148.
