1968
Joanne Gunderson Carner
Mrs. Carner won her fifth Women's Amateur Championship by defeating Mrs. Welts,
5 and 4, at the Birmingham Country Club, Birmingham, Mich. Mrs. Carner thus
had earned only one less Championship than Mrs. Glenna Collett Vare, who won
six between 1922 and 1935; no one has won as many.
Mrs. Welts was a three-time Champion, and in 11 of the previous 13 years either
she or Mrs. Camer reached the final round. Mrs. Welts had gone to at least the
quarter-finals in 12 of the previous 14 Championships.
Mrs. Carner was 1 up after the morning 18-hole round, and 2 up after 11 holes
in the afternoon. Mrs. Carner then scored consecutive birdies on the 12th and
13th and pitched to within 18 inches of the hole for a par and a win on the
14th, thus closing out the match.
Against Miss Catherine Lacoste, of Paris, France, Mrs. Carner put on a devastating
finish to win her semi-final match. Miss Lacoste was even with Mrs. Carner after
11 holes. Mrs. Carner then scored with a par on the 12th and three consecutive
birdies, winning, 4 and 3.
Mrs. Welts defeated Miss Joyce Kazmierski, of Detroit, 2 and 1, in the other
semi-final match. Miss Lacoste was qualifying medalist with 143, one under par.
This score equaled the record for 36-hole qualifying set by Miss Shelley Hamlin
in 1966.
