1970
Martha Wilkinson
Miss Martha Wilkinson, of Whittier, Calif., defeated Miss Cynthia Hill, of
St. Petersburg, Fla., 3 and 2, in the final match at the Wee Burn Country Club,
Darien, Conn. Miss Wilkinson and Miss Hill were close friends and had been travelling
together and playing in tournaments since the Women's Open Championship in June.
Twice during the final round Miss Hill hit approaches to the 16th hole into
a creek. She recovered the lost hole in the morning and went to lunch leading,
1 up. However, she was 2 down playing the 16th in the afternoon, and when she
made 6 she had lost the match.
All four semi-finalists were members of the 1970 Curtis Cup Team. Miss Wilkinson
defeated Miss Shelley Hamlin, of Fresno, Calif., 5 and 4, and Miss Hill defeated
Miss Jane Bastanchury, 2 up.
Miss Wilkinson was medalist with 150, while both Miss Hill and Miss Hamlin
had to survive a playoff to reach match play. All but one member of the British
Isles Curtis Cup Team played, but none survived the second round.
